Downloading and deploying the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x

Purpose

The vCenter Server Appliance 5.x is a module for vCenter Server, and so it is downloaded from the vCenter Server 5.x download page. This article provides the steps to download and deploy the Linux vCenter Server Appliance 5.x.

Resolution

To download the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x:

  1. Go to the VMware vSphere Download Center.
  2. Find the section for the license type you purchased, such as Essentials.
  3. Within that section, next to VMware vCenter Server 5.x and modules, click Download.
  4. if you agree to the EULA, click Yes.
  5. Download these files, by clicking the blue file type on the right:

    • VMware vCenter Server 5.x Appliance - OVF File
    • VMware vCenter Server 5.x Appliance - System Disk
    • VMware vCenter Server 5.x Appliance - Data Disk

To deploy the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x:

  1. Launch the vSphere Client/
  2. Go to File > Deploy OVF Template.
  3. Browse to the location of the vCenter Appliance .ovf file and click Open.
  4. In the OVF Template Details page, click Next.
  5. In Name and Location, enter the name of your vCenter Server Appliance, then click Next.
  6. Select a datastore, then click Next.
  7. Select a disk format, then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
