Determining the build number of VMware ESX and VMware vCenter Server

Purpose

This article provides information on how to determine the build of an ESX host and vCenter Server.

Resolution

There are two ways to find the build number of an ESX host or a vCenter Server.
  • Connecting the vSphere Client to the vCenter Server.
  • Physically or remotely accessing the ESX host at the console.

Determining the build number of ESX using the vSphere Client

To determine the build number of ESX using the vSphere Client:

  1. Using the vSphere Client log in to the vCenter Server or ESX host.
  2. In the Hosts and Clusters view, click the ESX host in the inventory.
  3. Above the tabs, you see a line that identifies the host. This line includes the build number of the selected ESX host.

Determining the build number of vCenter Server using the vSphere Client

To determine the build number of vCenter Server using the vSphere Client:

  1. Using the vSphere Client log in to the vCenter Server.
  2. Click Help > About VMware vSphere.

The About VMware vSphere dialog opens and displays the build number of the vCenter Server.

Determining the build number of ESX at the console

To determine the build number of ESX by using the console:

Note: This article assumes you have working knowledge of a Linux based environment. For more information, see Common Linux-based operating system operations (1022050).
  1. Log into the ESX host at the console as root. If you wish connect remotely, see Enabling root SSH login on an ESX host (8375637).
