Unable to export to SMB with ESXi hosts using vCenter Lab Manager

Symptoms

  • Cannot export to SMB with ESXi hosts using vCenter Lab Manager
  • You are unable to use smbmount when using vCenter Lab Manager 
  •  Cannot find any suitable hosts connected to the datastore esx-hostname on an ESXi host

Cause

This issue occurs because ESXi does not support the smbmount functionality and, therefore, vCenter Lab Manager cannot perform SMB operations for importing or exporting.

Resolution

Standard ESX classic versions, such as ESX 3.5 Update 5 and ESX 4.x, that are currently supported with vCenter Lab Manager continue to allow the SMB functionality. However, ESXi does not support this. Also, there are no plans to include this functionality in the future releases.
