Symptoms
- Attempting to stage or remediate ESX/ESXi 4.0 or 4.1 patches with VMware Update Manager fails
- You see the error:
Cannot download VIB files from patch source. - The vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log file shows that Update Manager is receiving a Status Code: 404when trying to download the patch binary from the patch portal:
Note: The log location for Windows 2003 is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs. The log location for Windows Vista and 2008 is C:\ProgramData\Vmware\Vmware Update Manager\Logs.

Resolution
This issue occurs because the relative path to patches has changed.
Updated metadata was released for this issue on June 24, 2011.
If you experience this issue after June 24, 2011, perform a Patch Download Task in VMware Update Manager.
To perform a Patch Download Task:
- Choose Update Manager from Home/Solutions and Applications.
- Click the Configuration tab.
- Select Patch Download Settings.
