ESX Server Software Installation Fails when Fibre Channel Cable Connected to the Server

Details

When installing ESX Server on a system where the HBA is connected to the Fibre Channel storage array:

Using the graphical installation mode -- the installer terminated at the partitioning page and throws an exception: "Runtime Error: Checking the size of the partition which has not be allocated yet".

Using the text installation mode -- the installer made it past the partitioning task, but terminated before installing packages.

Solution

To workaround this issue, disconnect the cable(s) from the Fibre Channel HBA(s) on the server. Then proceed with the ESX 3.0.x installation.

This issue is fixed in ESX Server 3.5/3i Update 1. Disconnecting the Fibre Channel cable is not needed for when you install 3.5 Update 1 or 3i update 1.
