Unable to power on a virtual machine due to an invalid value

Symptoms

  • Unable to power on virtual machine
  • You receive the following error:

    The power on operation failed unexpectedly

  • VMware Infrastructure Client generates the following error: 

    Invalid Value "/vmware.log" for configuration key "log.filename"

Resolution

To ensure you can power on the virtual machine:

  1. Open ESX command line
  2. Run the following command to change directory to the virtual machine's directory:

    cd /vmfs/volumes/<datastore>/<vm_directory>

  3. Open the following file in a text editor:

    <vm_name>.vmx

  4. Remove the '/' from the entry log.filename.
  5. Save and re-add the virtual machine to the inventory
