Not Enough Licenses error when using SMP or SAN on VMware Infrastructure 3 Starter Edition

Details

  • If you configure a virtual machine on VMware Infrastructure 3 Starter edition to use SMP, you see the error:

    Not enough licenses
  • Adding a virtual hard disk on SAN fails
  • You see the error:

    There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation.

    Note: U
    sing a local disk to add the virtual hard disk is successful.
     
  • If you try to start a virtual machine with a virtual hard disk on SAN through command line, you see the error:

    VMControl error -999: Unknown error: SoapError: ServerFaultCode(1515) : (There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation.)

Solution

SMP is not a licensed feature of VMware Infrastructure 3 Starter edition.

If you want to use SAN for adding virtual hard disks, change the license for the ESX host from Starter edition to Standard edition.
