Automation and mulitplatformsupport is gaining more and more popularity. We already a multihypervisor management tool from VMware for Hyper-V and VMware. From vCloud Automation Center you can create workloads in AWS and many more.
Amazon has now come up with its own tool to bring the worlds of AWS and vSphere together. Amazon wants to make it easier to migrate over from VMware to amazon EC2 with this tool.virtualization admins can now manage their workloads in AWS Management Portal for vCenter, from within the same interface virtualization that they have been using for years. There is even integration with Active Directory for a single sign-on experience.
This looks confusing because VMware had already announced that new features won’t be available in the old vSphere client and that all new features will be developed for the vSphere Web client.
Those familiar with AW, the AWS Management portal should not be a problem. The visual appearance and the workflow that you use to create new AWS resources will be familiar. You can import your existing” golden” VMware images to EC2 through the portal if you want to.
There are some few limitations:
- Doesn’t work with the web client.
- You can connect each vCenter with only one AWS account and only one identity provider
- Users can’t access the management portal unless they have an account that they can use to log into vCenter.
- Sessions are authenticated to AWS using SAML 2.0 only.
- The initial release only primarily supports Amazon EC2 resources.
- You must launch instances into a VPC. You can’t launch Amazon EC2 instances into EC2-Classic.
